Lydia Julian—“Lyd” to those closest to her—was born on a military base in Spokane, Washington, and grew up in Eagle River, Alaska. She’s also lived in Texas before eventually settling in Arkansas in 2011, which she now calls home. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a government agent, drawn to the idea of serving and protecting others.
Lydia’s academic path began at the University of Central Arkansas, where she studied Criminology. She later earned a master’s degree in Professional and Technical Writing from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Her interest in criminology came from a lifelong fascination with the justice system, while her love of writing has been both a creative outlet and a practical tool throughout her career.
During her undergraduate years, Lydia immersed herself in extracurricular activities and gained hands-on experience at the juvenile courthouse in Conway, where she shadowed probation officers, attended hearings, and coordinated a tutoring program for at-risk youth. In graduate school, she served in two assistantships—one focused on faculty professional development and the other on thesis and dissertation editing. She also took on leadership as the public relations officer for the Graduate Student Association, supporting fellow students with resources and advocacy. Later, she worked with the Arkansas Department of Education, helping secure USDA goods for organizations connected to state-funded grants.
One of her favorite aspects of her work is how much writing is involved—something she believes is at the heart of nearly every part of life. Outside of work, Lydia enjoys working out at the gym, diving into mystery thrillers and fantasy novels, or relaxing with Gymshark athlete vlogs, new workout playlists, and her favorite podcasts (The Huberman Lab, DOAC, and The Mel Robbins Podcast).
Family is a huge part of Lydia’s life. She’s one of seven siblings—four sisters and two brothers—and the second youngest in the group. Together with their parents, spouses, nieces, and nephews, they stay connected through an active family group text chain called Family Goya. There are even smaller chains like Middle Spoon, You Ghogh Girl, and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants—a sister-only thread. With six nephews and four nieces (and counting), Lydia describes her family as an “ever-growing organism,” full of connection, humor, and love.
